Abstract
:
This report replies to the comments made by Dr Kuno on our paper “Successful propagation of Alkhumra (misnamed as alkhurma) virus in C6/36 mosquito cells” which was published in the journal of Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. It was made clear that Alkhumra virus successfully isolated in the mosquito cell line C6/36 and further adapted to several mammalian cell lines and the virus was identified on them by indirect fluorescence and RT-PCR. On the other hand, it was made clear that we have not imported Kyasanur Forest diseases virus to Saudi Arabia and never worked with it in our laboratory. As indicated in our discussion, past reports have described the isolation of a number of tickborne flaviviruses from mosquitoes in the field and their replication in mosquito cell culture. Conversely, other reports have described the isolation of a number of mosquito borne viruses from ticks and their replication in tick cell culture. Kuno speculated that this was most likely explained by the persistence of these viruses in unnatural vectors as a result of accidental acquisition of the viruses when these vectors feed on infected vertebrate hosts. If this is so, then the presence of ALKV RNA in a single tick should not be regarded as significant.
